What is choking?

Choking occurs when an object blocks a person's airway, making it difficult or impossible to breathe.

What happens?

A blocked airway prevents oxygen from reaching the lungs, which can lead to brain damage. If left unaided, the individual choking can lose consciousness and be at high risk for death.

What symptoms?

- Difficulty breathing, speaking, or coughing- A red, puffy face- Signs of distress, such as pointing to the throat or grasping the neck

If you see someone doing or/and with those symptoms and actions, perform first aid! Here's how:

1. Give five back blows. Stand to the side and just behind a choking person.
2. Give five abdominal thrusts. If back blows don't remove the stuck object, give five abdominal thrusts, also known as the Heimlich maneuver.
3. Alternate between five blows and five thrusts until the blockage is dislodged.

Potassium & Phosphorus

1Q. Which has atom a smaller radius?
1A. Phosphorus has a smaller radius because of how much greater its nuclear charge is.
2Q. Which atom has a lower ionization energy?
2A. Potassium has a lower ionization energy because it has a larger radius, meaning that the outermost electrons are furthest away from the nucleus.
3Q. What atom is easiest to remove an electron from?
3A. Potassium is the easiest because the larger the atom, the easier it is to remove an electron from its outermost shell.
4Q. What color would Phosphorus emit and why?
4A. Phosphorus would emit greenish-blue or violet light because it is closer to the nucleus making it require more energy to excite an electron. Green-violet contain more energy.
5Q. What atom will need a lower energy color of light to ionize its electrons?
5A. Potassium will need a lower energy color of light in order to ionize its electrons because it is harder to excite an electron, meaning that it is further from the nucleus and therefore needs less energy to ionize its electrons.
6Q. Which atom has the valence electrons that experience the most shielding? Why?
6A. Phosphorus is the atom because it has valence electrons closer to the nucleus, more effectively blocking the pull it has on other electrons.
7Q. Which atom has less protons?
7A. Phosphorus has less protons because it is on a lower energy level than Potassium.
8Q. Which atom has more energy levels?
8A. Potassium because it is in the 4th row of the periodic table, meaning it has 4 energy levels which is 1 more than Phosphorus (3).
